I've been obsessing over my lawn for about ten years. I made all the usual mistakes — fertilizing by feel, timing my pre-emergent by the calendar instead of soil temperature, eyeballing spray tank rates and hoping for the best. At some point I started actually reading the research: university extension bulletins, peer-reviewed turfgrass studies, agronomic guidelines from land-grant institutions. What I found was that most of the calculations I was botching had real, documented answers. Nobody had just put them in a usable tool.

That's what TurfDial is. I built the tools I wish I'd had when I started — so the right number is one click away instead of buried on page six of a PDF.

What's in the tools

Every calculator is grounded in a real agronomic model — a university extension formula, a peer-reviewed study, or an established methodology you can look up yourself. Each tool ships with a plain- English explainer that names the source, walks through the math, and says exactly where the model holds and where it breaks down.

The suite covers the stuff that actually trips people up: nitrogen rate from a bag label to your square footage, soil pH amendment, tank-mix spray chemistry, crabgrass pre-emergent timing by soil temperature, PGR reapplication window by growing degree day, topdressing volume, irrigation run time and cost. Each tool exists because the math is non-obvious, getting it wrong has real consequences, and the right answer is already out there in published science.

On the numbers

I'm not an agronomist. But every number on this site traces back to a source you can pull up and verify yourself — the citation is in the explainer, not tucked away somewhere. And when a model has a known weakness, the tool says so upfront: a texture-based pH estimate that a real buffer-pH lab test would sharpen, a GDD threshold validated on one grass species and applied to another, a weather grid that isn't your exact microclimate. I'd rather give you an honest range than a confident-looking number that's secretly a guess.

For any pesticide or fertilizer rate, the product label always governs. TurfDial gets you into the right ballpark; the label is the final word on what's legal and safe.

What I'm committed to

• Accurate math. Every formula traces to a citable source. I don't approximate a documented model when the real one is available.
• Honest caveats. Every tool says what it doesn't account for. Precision and transparency aren't opposites — they're the same thing.
• No accounts, no tracking. The tools are stateless. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
• The answer, not the noise. The number you came for is the whole point. No upsells, no email capture, no fluff.
• Mobile-first. These get used outside, next to the spreader or sprayer, on a phone with muddy hands.
