Why lawn spray rates are “per 1,000 square feet”

Almost every turf product label writes its rate per 1,000 square feet — “apply 4 oz per 1,000 sq ft.” That shared basis is the only thing that lets you combine several products in one tank, so this calculator normalizes everything to amount per 1,000 sq ft, then scales it to your lawn and your sprayer. If a label gives a rate per acre instead, divide it by 43.56 to get the per-1,000 rate (an acre is 43,560 sq ft).

Calibrate your sprayer first — the step most people skip

Every number below hinges on one value: your sprayer's output rate— how many gallons of spray it actually puts down per 1,000 sq ft. You can't look this up. It depends on your nozzle, your pressure, and how fast you walk, so the only way to know it is to measure it. Skipping this is the single most common cause of over- or under-application.

  1. Fill the sprayer with a known amount of plain water.
  2. Spray a measured area at your normal pace and pressure — for example, 20 ft × 50 ft = 1,000 sq ft.
  3. Measure how much water you used.
  4. That volume, scaled to 1,000 sq ft, is your output rate. The calculator's calibration helper does this division for you.

Re-check it now and then. Nozzles wear, pressure drifts, and your walking pace changes — and the whole calculation rides on this one number.

How the tank math works

Once it knows your output rate, the engine does three things:

  • Normalizes each product to ounces per 1,000 sq ft, converting any “per gallon” rate using your output rate.
  • Multiplies by your lawn size for the total amount to buy or mix.
  • Splits that across tank loads — how many full tanks, plus the leftover partial — so each load gets the right amount of every product.

Tank coverage (×1,000 sq ft) = tank size (gal) ÷ output rate (gal / 1,000)
Product per full tank (oz) = rate (oz / 1,000) × tank coverage

The partial last tank

Your lawn almost never divides into a whole number of full tanks — the last load is usually partial, and that's where mixes go wrong. Dose a partial tank at the full-tank amount and you over-apply; eyeball it low and you under-treat the strip that's left. The calculator sizes the partial exactly: the product for the area that actually remains, and the water to match it.

Cost per 1,000 sq ft

Enter each product's price and container size and the tool also reports cost per 1,000 sq ft and total cocktail cost — the number that tells you whether a program is worth running across a whole season.

Honest caveats

  • The label is the law. This tool sizes a mix; it does not override the product label. The label's rate, maximum rate, and application limits are legally binding and always win.
  • Calibration drifts. Re-check your output rate periodically — worn nozzles, low pressure, and a faster pace all change it.
  • Compatibility is on you to vet. The calculator will size any cocktail you build, but it doesn't know whether those products are chemically compatible. Follow each label's mixing guidance, and if you're unsure about a combination, jar-test it before loading the tank.
  • It sizes the mix, not the method. Hold steady pressure and pace, agitate the tank, and follow the label's mixing order — technique affects the result as much as the math.

Standard basis: turf labels in oz per 1,000 sq ft; 1 gallon = 128 fl oz; per-acre rates ÷ 43.56 = per-1,000.

What is a tank mix?

A tank mix is a combination of two or more pesticide or fertilizer products loaded into a single sprayer tank and applied together in one pass. Mixing products saves application time and reduces soil compaction from multiple passes. Tank mixes must be checked for product compatibility before mixing — some combinations cause precipitation, separation, or chemical reactions that reduce efficacy or damage the sprayer.

How do I calculate how much product to put in a partial tank?

Determine your sprayer's output rate (gallons per 1,000 sq ft), then calculate the total area the partial tank needs to cover. From there, scale each product's rate proportionally: if a full tank covers 10,000 sq ft and you only need to cover 3,000 sq ft, you need 30% of each product's full-tank amount. In what order should I add products to a tank mix?

The general rule is: water (half the required volume), then wettable powders or water-dispersible granules (WP/WDG), then suspension concentrates (SC/SE), then emulsifiable concentrates (EC), then surfactants and adjuvants, then the remaining water. Always check individual product labels — some specify a particular loading order. Never mix concentrated products together before adding to water.

How do I calibrate my sprayer output rate?

Spray water over a known area (e.g., 1,000 sq ft) at your typical walking speed and pressure, then measure how many gallons you used. Gallons used divided by the area in thousands of sq ft equals your output rate in gallons per 1,000 sq ft. This measured rate is the value to enter as your sprayer's application rate. Recalibrate if you change pressure, nozzles, or speed.
