What an inch of water actually means in gallons
A useful fact to hold onto: one inch of water applied to one square foot of lawn is approximately 0.62 gallons. That constant comes from CSU Extension (Dr. Tony Koski) and is derived from the more general figure that one acre-inch — one inch of water over one acre — equals 27,154 gallons exactly.
The math: 27,154 gal ÷ 43,560 sq ft/acre ≈ 0.6234 gal per sq ft per inch
A worked example: a 5,000 sq ft lawn watered at 1 inch per week uses roughly 3,117 gallons per week — that's 81,042 gallons over a 26-week season. At a typical municipal rate of $5 per 1,000 gallons, that's about $405 in water alone, before sewer charges.
Most homeowners severely underestimate how much of their summer water bill is the lawn. For a large irrigated lawn, it can easily be 50–70% of summer water use. This calculator makes that number concrete.
Why your meter reads higher than the math suggests
The gallons this tool computes are the theoretical applied depth — what hits the ground if every drop stayed put. Your water meter doesn't care about the theory. It measures what the meter pumped, which includes:
- Evaporation at the nozzle — fine mist from spray heads evaporates before it lands, especially during hot, dry, windy conditions (exactly when you're irrigating most).
- Non-uniform distribution — every sprinkler system has head-to-head coverage gaps and hot spots. The average catch may be 1 inch, but parts of the zone got 0.6 and parts got 1.4. To get the dry spots to 1 inch, you ran the zone to 1.2 inches average.
- Surface runoff — especially on sloped areas or clay soils, water runs off before it soaks in. It still goes through the meter.
- Overspray onto hardscapes — heads that clip driveways, sidewalks, or fences waste water that still metered.
Irrigation engineers call the ratio of what the turf receives to what the meter records “application efficiency,” and typical home lawn systems run at 60–75% efficiency. Treat the calculator's gallons number as a floor — your actual meter reads 25–40% higher for the same lawn coverage.
Flat rates, tiered rates, and sewer billing
This calculator uses a flat per-gallon rate. Most utilities don't charge that way.
- Tiered (inclining block) rates are the most common structure: the first 2,000 gallons per month at one price, the next tier at a higher price, and so on. Heavy summer irrigation puts most lawn water into the upper tiers — the most expensive ones. If your utility uses tiered pricing, the real cost of that last gallon is higher than the blended rate on your bill suggests.
- Seasonal rates — some utilities charge more per gallon in summer months to manage peak demand. Same flat-rate caveat applies.
- Sewer charges on irrigation — many municipalities bill sewer as a percentage of water consumption, which means every outdoor gallon gets a sewer surcharge even though it never enters the sewer system. The tool defaults this to off because many utilities offer an exception for outdoor use. Check your bill or call your utility; some offer an “irrigation meter” or “deduct meter” that removes outdoor water from the sewer calculation entirely.
How to cut the bill without starving the lawn
The goal is to deliver the water the turf needs with as little waste as possible. Three practices move the needle most:
- Water deeply and infrequently. Two or three sessions per week at longer run times push moisture deeper into the soil profile, encouraging roots to follow. Shallow, frequent watering keeps roots near the surface — more vulnerable to heat and drought, and more dependent on constant irrigation.
- Cycle and soak on clay or slopes. If your run time is over 20–30 minutes, clay soils saturate and runoff starts before the session ends. Break the same total time into two or three cycles with 30–60 minute breaks in between. The surface drains before the next cycle starts. Same total water, less runoff. - Know your actual precipitation rate. “Run it 20 minutes” is a guess that can be off by 3× depending on your head type.
