Fertilizing a lawn correctly means understanding two distinct things: what the grass needs, and what's actually in the bag. The first number on any fertilizer label is the nitrogen percentage — not the nitrogen weight. A bag labeled 24-0-6 is 24% nitrogen by weight, so applying the bag is not the same as applying nitrogen. When your grass needs 0.75 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft, the formula is simple: divide the target nitrogen rate by the bag's nitrogen fraction to find how many pounds of product to spread. Every over-application and every burn trace back to skipping this step.
Per-application rate limits matter as much as the annual total. Quick-release nitrogen applied above established thresholds risks burning leaf tissue before the plant can process it. Slow-release formulations deliver nitrogen more gradually and allow a slightly higher per-application amount. Annual nitrogen needs also vary by species — cool-season grasses have different ranges from warm-season varieties, and low feeders like centipedegrass can be harmed by what would be a normal rate on bermudagrass.
Soil pH works under all of this as a silent multiplier. Nutrients can be present in the soil and on the bag, but still unavailable if pH is out of range. Lime and sulfur amendments correct pH over time — the right amount depends on your current pH, your target, and your soil type. Regular soil testing every two to three years is the only way to know where you stand.
