Why soil temperature, not the calendar
Crabgrass doesn't read a calendar — it reads the soil. Its seeds germinate on a temperature trigger, and that trigger is the temperature of the soil itself, not the air and not the date. A fixed “apply in early April” rule is wrong in most years: a warm March pushes germination weeks early, a cold snap holds it off. Soil temperature at a 2-inch depth is the direct, measurable predictor of when crabgrass wakes up — so that's what this tool tracks.
The 50–55°F application window
Across more than a dozen land-grant turf programs, the guidance converges on a tight range: crabgrass and other summer annual grasses germinate once 2-inch soil temperatures reach about 55°F and hold there. Your pre-emergent has to be down and watered in before that — so the application window is the 50–55°F band, while the soil is still warming toward the germination point.
- 50°F and rising — the window opens; get your product down.
- Sustained 55°F — germination begins; you're at the edge.
- 60–70°F — peak germination; a pre-emergent now is too late.

Those numbers are for crabgrass (and foxtail, which times the same). Goosegrass germinates later — around 60–65°F — so its window sits about 5°F warmer; the target-weed selector shifts the thresholds to match.
How to read the result
- Too early — hold: soil is still below 50°F. Nothing to do yet but get your product ready; the projected date updates as the soil warms.
- Apply now: soil is in the 50–55°F window. This is the moment — apply and water it in.
- Window closing: soil has hit germination range. Apply immediately; you're at the tail of the effective window.
- Window passed: soil has sustained germination temperatures. A pre-emergent won't stop crabgrass that's already up — switch to an early post-emergent and aim earlier next spring.
Why a second application
Crabgrass doesn't germinate all at once. Seeds at different depths, near warm pavement, and in varying sun exposure sprout across a window that can span 8 to 12 weeks. A single application lays a barrier that degrades over time — faster in warm, moist soil — so it can wear thin before the last seeds germinate. The standard fix is a split: roughly half the seasonal rate at the first application, the other half 6 to 8 weeks later. Honest caveats
- This is modeled soil temperature, not a reading from your yard. It comes from a weather model; your actual soil runs warmer or cooler with soil type, moisture, sun, and proximity to pavement (south-facing strips along a driveway warm first). For your exact lawn, a $10 soil thermometer at 2 inches beats any model — use this tool to know when to start checking.
- Early beats late. A pre-emergent applied a little early costs almost nothing — in cold soil the barrier barely degrades. Applied late, after germination, it does nothing. When in doubt, go early.
- It has to be watered in. Pre-emergent forms a barrier at the soil surface; most products need about a half-inch of irrigation or rain within a few days to activate.
- Cross-check with forsythia. The old gardener's rule holds up: forsythia blooms as soil reaches the low 50s°F, so when the forsythia in your area is in full bloom, your window is opening.
