Why seeding rates are ranges, not single numbers
Extension seeding rate tables are published as ranges — and so is the output of this calculator. The reason is Pure Live Seed (PLS): the percentage of seed in a bag that is both pure (the species advertised, not inert material or weed seed) and viable (capable of germinating). PLS = purity % × germination %.
A bag of Kentucky bluegrass with 85% PLS needs more pounds per 1,000 sq ft than a bag with 95% PLS to achieve the same seedling density — because fewer seeds in the lower-PLS bag are actually viable. Extension rate tables set ranges wide enough to cover typical product-to-product variation. The labeled rate on your specific bag already accounts for that product's PLS, which is why the bag's labeled rate is the authority for that product. This calculator gives you a planning estimate; the bag gives you the final number.
If you want to apply the PLS formula manually: adjusted rate = extension rate ÷ (purity × germination). Both numbers appear on the seed analysis tag required on every commercial seed bag.
New seeding vs. overseeding — why the rates differ
New seeding establishes a stand on bare or heavily thinned soil. Overseeding fills gaps in an existing lawn. The goals are different, so the rates are different — overseeding rates are roughly half the new-seeding rate across all species.
A common overseeding mistake is applying at new-seeding rates. When you overseed into existing turf, seedlings already face competition for light, water, and nutrients. Adding twice as many seeds doesn't double the stand density — it creates a densely packed seedling population where individual plants compete with each other and with the existing turf, producing weak, spindly plants more susceptible to drought and disease. Species notes: why the rates vary so widely
Seed size and germination density explain most of the rate variation across species:
- Kentucky bluegrass has roughly 1.5–2 million seeds per pound — among the smallest grass seeds. A low seeding rate still delivers dense germination. It also spreads via rhizomes once established, so gaps fill in over time.
- Turf-type tall fescue has around 200,000–250,000 seeds per pound. It is a bunch-type grass with no rhizomes — it can't spread laterally to fill bare spots. A higher seeding rate (6–9 lb new) is necessary to establish the density needed to resist weed encroachment without self-repair.
- Perennial ryegrass is similar in size to tall fescue and germinates very quickly (5–10 days vs. 14–21 for KBG). It's often used as a nurse grass or in cool-season blends for fast cover.
- Fine fescues (creeping red, chewings, hard fescue) fall between KBG and tall fescue in seed count. They excel in shade and low-input situations and are commonly blended with KBG for shaded cool-season lawns.
- Common bermudagrass (hulled) is seeded at very low rates because the seed is tiny and germinates aggressively in warm soil. “Hulled” means the seed coat has been removed, which dramatically improves germination speed — unhulled bermuda can take months to germinate. Warm soil (65°F+) is essential.
- Centipedegrass is seeded at extremely low rates (0.25–0.5 lb / 1,000 sq ft) because the seed is tiny — around 400,000 seeds per pound — and germinates at very high density per pound applied. Over-seeding centipede is a particularly easy mistake with real consequences: crowded seedlings fail to establish. Do not exceed the labeled rate.
- Zoysiagrass (seeded cultivars) is slow to germinate and establish — expect 2–3 weeks to germination and a full growing season to fill in. Rates are similar to bermuda; patience is the more important variable.
Not established from seed: St. Augustine and hybrid bermuda
St. Augustinegrass has no commercially available seeded variety. Cultivars are propagated vegetatively (sod, plugs, or sprigs) because the traits that define improved varieties — texture, color, disease resistance — cannot be reliably reproduced from seed. In cooler regions, it's cold-sensitive and typically limited to USDA hardiness zone 8 and warmer.
Hybrid bermudagrass (Tifway 419, TifTuf, Latitude 36, etc.) is sterile or produces off-type plants from seed. These are vegetatively propagated by sod, sprigs, or plugs only. When to seed matters as much as how much
Seeding rate is the easy part. Timing — aligning seeding with the species' active growth period — is where most failures happen:
- Cool-season species (KBG, tall fescue, fine fescues, perennial ryegrass): seed in late summer to early fall — soil is warm for germination, air temps moderate, and the growing season ahead is long before summer heat stress. Spring is a secondary window (germination works, but seedlings face summer heat before fully established). Avoid seeding in summer.
- Warm-season species (bermuda, zoysia, centipede): seed in late spring to early summer when soil temperatures are consistently 65°F+. The full growing season ahead lets seedlings establish before fall dormancy. Seeding too early (cool soil) causes slow, patchy germination and weed pressure.
Seedbed preparation and moisture: the real success factors
Research consistently shows that seed-to-soil contact and surface moisture during germination predict establishment success better than the seeding rate alone:
- New lawns: till to 4–6 inches, grade smooth, allow the seedbed to settle (or roll lightly), then seed with a slit-seeder or power rake in at least two directions. Firm seed-to-soil contact is the goal; loose fluffy soil lets seeds dry out between waterings.
- Overseeding: core aerate before seeding to open channels for seed-to-soil contact. Mow existing turf short to reduce competition for light. A slit-seeder is more effective than a broadcast spreader for overseeding because it places seed directly in the soil.
- Irrigation during germination: seeds need consistent surface moisture — light, frequent irrigation (2–3× per day if needed) rather than deep-and-infrequent. The surface must not dry out between cycles. Once germinated and the seedlings have a second true leaf, you can transition to less frequent, deeper irrigation.
A correctly calculated seeding rate applied to a poorly prepared seedbed will produce a worse stand than a slightly imprecise rate applied to a well-prepared one.

- The bag's labeled rate is authoritative. It reflects that product's seed size, purity, and germination. Extension ranges are a planning estimate; the bag is the final authority for that specific product.
- More is not better. Over-seeding causes seedling competition for light, water, and space. The result is weak, spindly plants more susceptible to disease and drought. Stay in range.
- Timing matters more than rate. A correctly timed seeding at a slightly imprecise rate will outperform a precisely calculated rate applied at the wrong time of year.
- Success depends on seedbed prep and moisture, not just the pound count. Seed-to-soil contact and consistent surface moisture during germination are the two factors most correlated with establishment success in extension literature.
