Brown Patch Risk: How Temperature and Humidity Thresholds Drive the Decision to Spray

Waiting for circular tan patches to appear before you spray a fungicide is already losing. By the time Rhizoctonia solani produces visible symptoms, the infection is established and a curative application costs more and works less. What the Fidanza Model Actually Measures

When a defined number of days within a rolling window meet those conditions, pressure is considered favorable for disease development.

The model was validated on cool-season turf — primarily tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass — so it is most directly applicable to those species under summer stress conditions.

Why a Rolling Five-Day Window

Brown patch does not develop from a single favorable night. Rhizoctonia needs sustained favorable conditions — repeated cycles of warm, humid air — to build enough inoculum and penetrate the canopy. A five-day rolling window captures that accumulation without overweighting a single anomalous day. If only one day in five meets the threshold, risk remains low. As more consecutive or near-consecutive days meet the threshold, the pressure score rises.
