Deep and Infrequent: The Watering Rule Everyone Quotes and Few Apply Correctly

Everyone in lawn care has heard it: water deeply and infrequently. Most people interpret that as "run the zones longer, maybe twice a week instead of every day." That's closer, but it still misses the actual mechanism — and the gap between the cliché and the correct application is exactly where shallow root systems get built.
What the rule is actually saying
The goal is not a fixed schedule. It's a fixed weekly depth tied to how much water your lawn is losing to evapotranspiration (ET). ET is the combined water loss from soil evaporation and transpiration through grass blades. In peak summer, a cool-season lawn in the mid-Atlantic or Midwest loses roughly 1.5–2.0 inches per week to ET. A warm-season lawn in the Southeast or Southwest might lose 1.0–1.5 inches. Run less than ET replacement and the grass goes into stress. Run more and you push water below the root zone, waste it, and create anaerobic conditions that favor disease. Neither outcome is what you want.

Before you can translate inches into minutes, you need to know how fast your sprinkler system actually applies water. The only reliable method is a catch-can test: set out several straight-sided containers across a zone, run it for exactly 15 minutes, measure the average depth in the cans, and multiply by four to get inches per hour.

Why the schedule has to float
A fixed calendar schedule — "Tuesdays and Fridays, 20 minutes per zone, all season" — will overwater in spring, underwater in August, and overwater again in September. The only way to apply the rule correctly is to treat the schedule as a variable that tracks ET.
That doesn't mean logging into a weather database every week. A simple approach: set your baseline for peak summer, then reduce runtime by roughly 25% in spring and fall when ET drops. Skip any irrigation cycle after a rain event that delivered more than 0.5 inches. That alone gets you most of the way there.
