Dumping extra seed on a thin lawn is one of the most common self-defeating moves in lawn care. The result is not a thicker stand — it's a weaker one. Seedling competition, damping-off pressure, and resource depletion conspire to kill more plants than the excess seed ever adds. The fix is using the correct overseed rate, which is meaningfully lower than what you'd use to establish a lawn from bare soil.

Why the Overseed Rate Is Lower Than the New-Lawn Rate
A new-lawn seeding starts with bare, prepared soil. Every seed has access to light, moisture, and nutrients without competition from established plants. The seeding rate for that scenario is calibrated to fill open ground.
An overseed is a different situation entirely. Existing turf — even thin, struggling turf — occupies space, intercepts light, and competes for water and nutrients. You are not filling bare ground; you are establishing seedlings inside an active plant community. The rate must reflect that.
Kentucky bluegrass is a clear example. Extension guidance from CSU, Penn State, UGA, NC State, and Texas A&M AgriLife puts the new-lawn rate at 2–3 lb per 1,000 sq ft and the overseed rate at 1–1.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft. That's roughly half. The reduction is not arbitrary — it matches the density the seedbed can actually support.
What Happens When You Exceed the Rate
Seed that lands where another seed already landed does not improve germination. Both seeds germinate, then compete for the same patch of soil moisture and light. The weaker seedling dies. The stronger one survives, but in a stressed state — thinner stem, shallower root, more susceptible to disease.
Damping-off, caused by soilborne pathogens like Pythium and Rhizoctonia, thrives in exactly these conditions: dense seedling canopy, restricted airflow, and consistently moist soil from the frequent irrigation a germinating seed requires. A crowded overseed is a damping-off event waiting to happen. You end up with bare patches where the seedling mass collapsed — worse than where you started.
The economics are just as bad. Seed is not cheap. Every pound beyond the recommended rate is money that actively works against the outcome you want.
Reading the Rate Table
Extension seeding rate tables always give two numbers: a new-lawn rate and an overseed rate. If the bag you're holding only shows one number, it's almost certainly the new-lawn rate. Using it for an overseed means you're doubling or tripling the appropriate rate before you've even opened the bag.
The rates vary by species because seed size, germination speed, and competitive behavior differ. Fine fescues and tall fescues have larger seeds and establish more aggressively than Kentucky bluegrass, so their rates are calibrated accordingly. Always look up the rate for the specific species you're seeding — blended bags should list the dominant species, and you apply the rate for that species.

A Worked Example
You have a 4,000 sq ft lawn, mostly Kentucky bluegrass, with thin areas you want to fill in. You're overseeding in early fall.
The extension overseed rate for Kentucky bluegrass is 1–1.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft.
- At 1 lb/M: 4,000 ÷ 1,000 × 1 = 4 lb of pure live seed
- At 1.5 lb/M: 4,000 ÷ 1,000 × 1.5 = 6 lb of pure live seed

Prep Work Matters More Than Rate
The single biggest lever in a successful overseed is seed-to-soil contact, not seed quantity. A properly run core aerator or a vertical slicer creates the openings where seed can reach mineral soil, make contact, and germinate. Seed sitting on top of a thatch layer germinates poorly regardless of rate.
Mow the existing lawn short before overseeding. Remove clippings. Aerate or slit-seed if thatch exceeds about a half inch. Then apply seed at the correct rate and keep the seedbed consistently moist until germination — typically twice daily in dry conditions until seedlings are established enough to tolerate less frequent watering.
