When to Apply Pre-Emergent in Spring (Soil Temperature, Not the Calendar)

The number on your calendar is the wrong number
Most crabgrass pre-emergent failures come down to timing — applied too early, the herbicide breaks down before germination peaks; applied too late, seedlings are already through the soil barrier. The mistake that drives both errors is treating spring as a fixed date. "Apply in mid-March" or "put it down around Easter" are calendar rules. Crabgrass doesn't follow the calendar. It follows soil temperature.
The practical target is simple: get the pre-emergent down and watered in before the 2-inch soil temperature holds at around 55°F for several consecutive days. That's the threshold where crabgrass germination begins. If you work backward from that number, timing itself becomes reliable — regardless of whether the year runs warm or cold.
What soil temperature actually drives germination
Crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) is a warm-season annual. Its seeds sit dormant in the soil through winter and need heat to break dormancy. University of Maryland Extension puts the initial germination threshold at soil temperatures sustained at 53–55°F for five days. Purdue University Turfgrass Science, citing Fidanza et al. (1996), places the range a little higher: average daily soil temperature of 57–64°F at a one-inch depth. The practical takeaway from both is that nothing substantial happens below 55°F, and that your pre-emergent needs to be in the ground before soil temps climb into that range.
The distinction between "initial germination" and "peak germination" matters here. According to Michigan State University Extension, roughly 80% of seasonal crabgrass germination occurs when soil temperatures at the 0–2 inch depth are consistently between 60 and 70°F. So there's a window: soil temps cross 55°F and a trickle of germination begins; when they push into the 60s and hold, the main flush happens. Your pre-emergent needs to be fully watered into the soil and forming that chemical barrier before the trickle starts — not before the main flush.
Why the calendar fails, and what to use instead
The problem with calendar dates is that spring soil temperatures vary by four to six weeks across years and geography. A warm February in the mid-Atlantic can push soil temps to germination range weeks ahead of a cold, late-starting spring in the same location. A calendar date tuned to an "average" year is wrong for most actual years.
Soil temperature maps. The most direct method is checking live soil temperature data for your region. Several networks publish 2-inch or 4-inch soil temperature readings updated daily. If you can find data at a monitoring station near you, apply when readings are consistently approaching 50°F — MSU Extension notes that 50–55°F at the 0–2 inch depth is the optimal application window, giving the herbicide enough lead time to be watered in before germination begins.
Growing degree days. Because soil temperature data isn't always accessible, a widely used alternative is the growing degree day (GDD) model based on air temperature, which indirectly tracks soil warming. MSU Extension uses a base-32°F GDD model starting February 15, with an optimal application window of 250–500 GDD. The GDD model isn't a precise soil temperature reading — it's a proxy — but it's a well-validated one, and the window is wide enough that you don't have to hit a single day.
Phenological indicators. Forsythia bloom is the most widely cited biological cue. Purdue Turfgrass Science explains that forsythia reaches full bloom before crabgrass germination, and that flowers wither near germination — so seeing forsythia in full bloom means germination is close, not that it hasn't started. Rutgers Cooperative Extension puts it plainly in their homeowner fact sheet: when forsythia is in full bloom, apply pre-emergent herbicide "as soon as possible." Other landscape plants that bloom before germination include saucer and star magnolia, Bradford pear, and redbud (Cardina et al., 2011, as cited by Purdue).
The critical thing to understand about forsythia: it's a "hurry up" signal, not a "right on time" signal. Treat it as a last-call indicator that you may have days, not weeks, before germination begins. Also be aware, as both Purdue and MSU Extension note, that ornamental flowering is not always a consistent predictor of crabgrass germination in years with abnormal weather — the bloom timing and crabgrass soil temperature can be decoupled in unusually warm or cold springs.
The pre-emergent has to be watered in
Applying the herbicide is step one; getting it into the soil is step two, and step two is what actually forms the barrier. Most granular pre-emergents need to be irrigated into the soil within a few days of application to be effective. A product that sits dry on the lawn surface while soil temperatures climb through the 50s is not protecting your lawn.
If you're applying and rain isn't in the forecast within a few days, run your sprinklers. The label will specify the water-in requirement, but roughly a quarter- to half-inch of irrigation is typical. Delaying water-in is a common reason a correctly timed application still produces disappointing results.
How long does protection last?
Pre-emergent herbicides don't last all season. Residual effectiveness depends on the active ingredient, the application rate, soil conditions, temperature, and rainfall — generally in the range of 60 to 120 days. In regions with a long crabgrass germination window (the Southeast and mid-Atlantic, where new seedlings can emerge from late spring through early summer), a single early-spring application may break down before that window closes.
Rutgers Cooperative Extension recommends that in areas with a history of severe crabgrass infestations or sandy soils — where leaching reduces residual — a second application in early June may be warranted for products like pendimethalin and prodiamine. The active ingredient dithiopyr (Dimension) is the exception: it can provide early post-emergence control on crabgrass up to about the 1-tiller stage, which gives more flexibility if you're late on timing.
A split application strategy — applying at reduced rate twice, roughly six to eight weeks apart — can also extend protection into the summer while reducing the single-application rate. Check your product label for split-application guidance; not all products support it.
Seeding and pre-emergents don't mix
Nearly all pre-emergents will also prevent desirable grass seed from germinating. If you have thin or bare areas that need overseeding in spring, you face a conflict: the same barrier that stops crabgrass also stops new grass.
Your options are limited. A few products — siduron (Tupersan) and mesotrione (Starter Food for New Grass Plus Weed Preventer) — are labeled as safe for use at seeding, but their residual effectiveness against crabgrass is shorter than conventional products. If bare spots are substantial, you're generally better off timing seeding in early fall, well clear of pre-emergent applications, when crabgrass pressure is low and cool-season grasses establish better anyway.
Cultural practices that reduce crabgrass pressure
Pre-emergent chemistry is more effective on a healthy, dense turf. Crabgrass is an opportunist — it establishes in thin areas, bare soil, and compacted spots where desirable turf has given up. Rutgers Extension's research shows that mowing at the highest height recommended for your turf species can significantly reduce crabgrass infestations on its own, because the taller canopy shades the soil and makes it harder for seedlings to survive. Irrigation discipline matters too: frequent, shallow watering keeps the soil surface moist and favors weed seedlings over deeper-rooted turfgrass.
For cool-season grasses, the fall nitrogen program — rather than spring — is the time to build a dense canopy. MSU Extension notes that applying nitrogen from mid-June through mid-August promotes crabgrass more than the desirable turfgrass, which is under stress. A well-fed, high-cut cool-season lawn going into spring starts with a competitive advantage that reduces how hard the pre-emergent has to work.
Putting it together
The workflow isn't complicated once you drop the calendar logic:
Watch your soil temperature or GDD accumulation in late winter and early spring. When 2-inch soil temperatures are approaching 50°F, or you're in the 200–500 GDD range (base 32°F), that's your application window. If you spot forsythia going into full bloom and haven't applied yet, apply immediately. Water the product in within a few days of application. If your region has a long germination window and you have a history of late-summer escapes, plan a split application or a second hit in early June.
