What Your Lawn Actually Costs to Water — Turning Minutes Into Dollars

A lawn watered at one inch a week doesn't sound like much until you convert it into gallons. One inch of water over a 5,000 sq ft lawn is roughly 3,100 gallons — every single week. Multiply that by a summer's worth of watering and a metered water bill that looked confusing suddenly has an obvious explanation: the lawn is usually most of it.

The Conversion That Makes This Work

Water rates on a utility bill are priced per unit of volume — dollars per 1,000 gallons, or dollars per CCF (hundred cubic feet, which is 748 gallons). Irrigation is planned in inches of depth over an area. Connecting those two requires one constant: Colorado State University Extension's figure of 27,154 gallons per acre-inch — one inch of water spread across one acre. Scaled down to square feet, that's about 0.62 gallons per square foot per inch of water applied.

Why This Isn't Just a Curiosity

Knowing the actual dollar cost changes two decisions. What This Tool Prices — and What It Doesn't

This calculator deliberately does one job: pricing. It does not compute how much water your lawn should get, and it doesn't factor in evapotranspiration or weather. A few things worth knowing before you treat the output as gospel:

  • Metered use runs higher than the applied depth implies. Spray drift, evaporation off pavement and hardscape, runoff on slopes, and uneven coverage all mean the water leaving your meter is more than the water your turf actually absorbs. No efficiency factor is built into this calculator — treat its number as a floor, not a ceiling, on your real cost.
  • This uses a flat rate. Many utilities bill on a tiered structure where usage above a threshold costs more per gallon, especially in peak summer months. If your utility tiers its rates, your actual bill for heavy irrigation weeks will run higher than a flat-rate calculation shows.
  • Sewer charges vary by utility. Some water utilities bill sewer service based on metered water use — including outdoor irrigation that never goes down a drain — while others offer a separate "deduct" or irrigation meter that exempts outdoor water from the sewer charge entirely. The calculator defaults sewer off; check your bill or call your utility to know which situation applies to you.
  • Rainfall isn't credited. This prices irrigation applied, not total water the lawn received. If it rained 0.5 inches this week and your controller still ran a full inch, the calculator is pricing the full inch you applied through the system — as it should, since that's what shows up on the bill.

A Worked Comparison: Cutting From 1.5" to 1.0" Per Week

Say you've got a 6,000 sq ft lawn running at 1.5 inches per week through a 22-week growing season, and your combined water-plus-sewer rate comes to $9 per 1,000 gallons.
